Welcome to the official website for Nicole Cooke MBE, Olympic gold medalist
After setting her heart on winning the Olympics at the age of 11, Nicole won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and followed this up with gold at the world championship road race six weeks later, becoming the first rider in history to win Olympic and World Championship road race in the same year. Other highlights in a career that spanned 13 years include riding in the yellow jersey over the mythical mountains of the Tour de France en route to two Tour victories, gold at the Commonwealth Games road race and conquering the Spring Classics with victories in the Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallone and Tour of Flanders, and winning the World Cup Series.
The Breakaway was released in 2014 to great critical acclaim, being named The Sunday Times sport book of the year and Sweetspot cycling book of the year. The Breakaway was also a finalist for the William Hill sport book of the year and the British Sport Book Awards.
In the book, Nicole reveals the real story behind British cycling’s rise to global dominance. With a child’s dreams of success, she left home at 18 to pursue her goals in Italy. Broken contracts, unpaid wages, a horrendous injury and drugs cheats were just some of the challenges she faced, even before she lined up to take on her opponents. The Breakaway is a book that will not only inspire all those who read it, but which also asks some serious questions about the way society regards women’s sport.
